ANSI MH16.1, developed by the Rack Manufacturers Institute, covers design, testing and utilization; its published explanations distinguish column anchoring, loaded-column alignment, beam deflection and beam locking. This reference maps 20 entries—18 hardware, assembly or accessory groups and two use or condition entries—to those explanations, and adds something the design standard does not supply: a dated survey of published asking prices. What counts as a pallet rack component?

A pallet rack is a steel structure of columns, beams and braces that stores palletized goods in rows, bays and levels. RMI describes storage racks as structural systems assembled into rows, bays and levels, while Commerce's trade-order scope separately identifies covered steel racks and rack parts and expressly excludes certain decking and connection hardware. This page covers conventional selective-rack components and related conditions; its 20-entry classification is not a bill of materials for any one rack. 12

Two primary-source definitions bracket the topic. RMI, the developer of ANSI MH16.1, describes storage rack as a non-building structural system of columns, beams, diagonals and moment-resisting connections, usually served by material-handling equipment. Conventional selective rack is the type this page covers. Drive-in, push-back and pallet-flow systems have additional or different components and design conditions; it does not follow that each has a different governing rack standard. Cantilever rack has a separate standard, ANSI MH16.3, whose 2016 edition is identified in the model-code references discussed by RMI. 1

The Department of Commerce definition is broader in some respects and narrower in others: it defines a trade-order scope, not a complete engineering parts list. The 2025 continuation covers qualifying steel racks and parts across structural and roll-formed frames; structural, slotted, unslotted, Z-, C-, L-, step and cantilever beams; different coatings; and locking, bolted, clamped or welded connections. The same scope expressly excludes identified decks and nonsteel components, and pins, nuts, bolts, washers and clips used as connecting hardware; the detailed scope and exclusions control whether an imported product is covered. Describing an item as a pallet-rack component does not by itself place it inside the order. 2

Three plain-word definitions carry the rest of this page. Cold-formed steel is sheet or strip formed into its section without hot-rolling the finished shape; cold-formed and hot-rolled members both appear in storage racks. Teardrop describes the shaped connection openings in an upright; the beam-end and locking arrangement still belongs to a specific manufacturer's design. Load application and rack configuration (LARC) drawings document the loads, configuration and component information for which the rack was designed. A matching name or hole shape is not a substitute for that documentation. 133942

Structural parts: frames, columns, bracing, base plates, anchors, shims

The frame does the carrying. Two columns, joined by horizontal and diagonal braces, stand on baseplates anchored to the slab. RMI's FAQ answers a frequent rack-owner question: its anchoring rule applies to every column, including frames 8 feet tall or shorter, not only tall aisle columns. The anchor detail needs its own design: the FAQ discusses research reporting wedge-anchor pull-out performance at 3.0 bolt diameters from an unfilled abandoned hole and 1.5 diameters from a hole filled with dry-pack mortar. Those are reported research conditions, not a universal placement instruction; actual anchor selection and spacing remain part of the qualified design and the anchor manufacturer's requirements. 1

Bracing orientation is manufacturer-specific. Some manufacturers run the bottom diagonal from lower-front to upper-rear to place it in tension in a described impact case; others orient it differently to keep a weld away from the impact zone. RMI says it knows of no studies establishing one orientation as superior. That statement is not permission to reverse bracing: the installed frame must follow its manufacturer's design. 1

Load-surface parts: beams, connectors, decking, pallet supports

A beam pair makes a level. RMI describes a beam-deflection limit of L/180 at design load; automated handling systems can need tighter tolerances. The connector carries forces into the column, and the locking device resists the upward action that could disengage a beam. RMI's section 9.4.3 explanation describes 1,000 pounds-force of upward resistance for machine-loaded racks, except movable-shelf racks; it does not say the device must remain undistorted or that it can defeat a forklift's entire lifting capacity. 138

Wire decking follows its own design requirements under ANSI MH26.2, identified by RMI as the welded-wire decking standard. RMI's FAQ gives a 5,000-pound beam-pair/two 2,500-pound-deck example to explain coordinated capacity selection; it is an illustration, not a method of rating an unknown deck by dividing the beam capacity. RMI also warns against increasing a deck's assigned rating on the assumption that a pallet transfers all its weight directly into the beams. Deck dimensions, support arrangement and loading conditions still matter, and ordinary storage decking is not designed to be walked or stood on. 140

Stability parts: row spacers, ties, wall ties

Row spacers, also called back-to-back ties, connect two rows at a specified gap. RMI's July 2025 article, quoting a Steel King structural engineer, discusses longitudinal flue-space examples of 6, 8 and 12 or more inches and a typical vertical tie arrangement. Those examples are not a universal NFPA 13 clearance or tie-spacing rule: the rack design and the applicable fire-protection requirements control the actual arrangement. Spacers can stiffen the connected system; the article expressly distinguishes that from increasing an individual frame's capacity. 4

The height-to-depth rule governs whether a single row needs more than ordinary anchorage assumptions, and the height used is the top beam elevation—not simply the overall frame height. RMI's FAQ describes overturning-resistant anchors and baseplates above a 6:1 ratio, including a 350-pound horizontal force at the top shelf of an empty rack in its specified design case. At 8:1 or more, external ties are called for unless an engineer certifies anchorage that can resist the forces. Wall ties are not a casual substitute: RMI explains that forces transfer both ways between the building and rack, so both designs must be coordinated. 1

Protection and information parts: guards, plaques, barriers

Column protectors and end-of-aisle guards exist because impact can damage racks; RMI's section 4.4 discussion covers protection choices. The load plaque communicates the capacity of the documented configuration. RMI's 2020 article lists four kinds of information: maximum unit load and/or maximum uniformly distributed load per level; average unit load where applicable; maximum total load per bay; and the levels that allow stacked unit loads. Its guidance calls for plaques at entry points and where configurations differ. The directly read RMI FAQ specifies a minimum plaque area of 50 square inches; that is an RMI guidance finding, not a claim that a federal OSHA rack-plaque rule exists. 13

Barriers and netting are a design item, not an afterthought. RMI explains that the rack design considers locations where operations require product containment and that the owner identifies those locations. A pallet-placement stop, a product-containment net and a forklift-impact guard perform different jobs; none should be substituted for another simply because a seller groups them under safety accessories. 141

Modifications and conditions

Extending a frame or changing beam levels changes the design configuration. RMI directs those changes to the original manufacturer or a qualified design professional; plaques and LARC drawings need to describe the accepted configuration. Fire-exposed steel is a separate question: RMI discusses loss of cold-working strength benefits at approximately 570–1,110 °F and recommends professional-engineer-directed inspection and testing, or disposal, for components exposed above 250 °C, which it rounds to about 480 °F. Those material observations do not establish the residual capacity of a particular burned rack, and its separate discussion of temperatures down to −76 °F is not a blanket cold-service rating. 13

Which pallet rack component names get mixed up?

Eight groups of terms below separate assemblies, individual members, spaces and safety functions. They were compared in the cited RMI, manufacturer and seller documents on September 11, 2026; they are reference distinctions, not a measured ranking of the most common identification mistakes.

What does ANSI MH16.1 require of pallet rack components?

ANSI MH16.1 is a design, testing and utilization standard whose first ANSI approval was in 1997; RMI's history then describes revisions associated with 2002/2004, 2008, 2012, 2021 and 2023. Its published owner-facing explanations address anchoring, loaded-column alignment, beam deflection, locking devices, load plaques and inspections, but the applicable edition and configuration still matter. The figures below are attributed to the issuer's explanations, not presented as a substitute for the complete standard. 1

Anchoring, plumb and deflection

The three numbers above need their scope attached. Anchoring: RMI describes at least one anchor at every column under section 4.2, without thereby specifying anchor size. Alignment: its loaded-column limit is 1/2 inch per 10 feet, and its out-of-straight limit is 0.05 inch per foot between any two points; therefore a 20-foot column can be within 1 inch top-to-bottom yet exceed the local straightness limit if the bow is concentrated within its bottom 5 feet. Deflection: L/180 refers to the beam span at design load, not permanent damage, a proof load, or permission to test the rack in service. 1

Locking devices, plaques and inspections

RMI's section 9.4.3 explanation sets the 1,000-pound-force uplift requirement for locking devices on machine-loaded racks, with the movable-shelf exception identified in its dedicated guidance. Its section 4.5 explanation addresses permanent load plaques and a minimum area of 50 square inches. For inspections, RMI recommends a regularly scheduled, documented program performed by qualified people, inspections after events that could cause damage, and an interval no longer than a year as a minimum recommendation; the 2021 revision also added the owner post-installation inspection it identifies in section 4.3. These statements do not create a separate federal annual-inspection requirement. 1338

Two separate questions govern which edition applies: which code and amendments the authority having jurisdiction enforces for the project, and which design standard the project documents specify. RMI identifies MH16.1-2012 as the 2021 IBC reference and MH16.1-2021 as the 2024 IBC reference, and recommends use of its current standard even when the adopted code points to an older edition. That is a model-code comparison, not proof that every state has retained the reference unchanged. Existing-rack capacity also depends on its documented design and condition; a new code edition does not by itself produce a new capacity rating, and an alteration needs the applicable professional and authority review. 118

How much weight can pallet rack uprights and beams hold?

There is no generic pallet rack capacity: the documented rating depends on the frame, beam elevations, connections, loading and site conditions. Uline's capacity table displayed on its H-5719 listing runs from 27,600 pounds at spacing of 36 inches or less to 6,100 pounds at 120 inches, a calculated 77.9% decrease between the published endpoints. The listed frame is only 96 inches tall, so the table's higher-spacing rows cannot describe physically possible configurations of that SKU; they are preserved below as the source table, not attributed as usable ratings for the 96-inch frame. 15

Column stability is one reason beam spacing matters. The spacing between restraints is an input to the design, alongside the member section, loading pattern and connection behavior; it is not a stand-alone capacity calculator. RMI explains that earlier approaches used effective-length factors and that its 2021 revision adopted stability-design provisions. A seller's capacity chart remains a source-specific published chart: without its design basis and configuration limits, it cannot certify a new installation or a changed beam arrangement. 1

Uline's six listed standard beam lengths illustrate another design variable: their published face heights increase with length while each pair carries the same stated 5,000-pound rating. That is a comparison within one seller's product line, not a minimum-face-height formula for other beams. 7

Decking and beam capacities have to be coordinated, but they are separate ratings. RMI's 5,000-pound beam-pair/two 2,500-pound-deck example explains matching capacities for the described arrangement; it does not establish how an unknown deck is rated. Three of the four deck listings in this survey visibly state capacities of 2,200 or 2,500 lb each; the fourth category listing does not state a capacity. No value is inferred for that fourth listing. 11011

How much do pallet rack components cost?

We captured 20 published asking-price observations from five U.S. sellers on September 11, 2026. The sample medians are $123.46 for a 42-inch-deep, 96-inch-tall teardrop upright frame (six listings, $85.19–$219.95), $61.21 per 96-inch step beam (six listings, $51.88–$107.98 displayed per beam), $31.81 per 42-by-46-inch waterfall wire deck (four listings, $29.31–$45.00), and $60.98 per 18-inch steel column protector (two listings). Prices use the smallest displayed quantity tier and exclude optional promotional discounts, freight and tax; the two lowest upright observations are factory-overrun stock, and ratings are not interchangeable across the sample.

What a bare starter bay costs at these medians (a computation, not a market figure)

An illustrative standalone bay with two elevated beam levels uses two upright frames and four beams; assuming two of the sampled deck sizes at each level adds four decks. Using the displayed, cent-rounded sample medians gives 2 × $123.46 + 4 × $61.21 + 4 × $31.81 = $619.00 before anchors, guards, freight, tax, engineering and installation. A conceptual add-on bay that shares a frame has one fewer frame in that arithmetic, but the connected row still needs a complete design review. This is a calculation from mixed listings—not a purchasable, compatible bill of materials, a transaction price or a minimum safe rack design—and the all-frame median includes both column sections. Substituting the sampled 3-by-3-inch frame median of $200.00 yields $772.08, using the same displayed-median convention.

What moves these prices

Three distinctions showed up in the listings themselves. Column section: the sampled 3-by-3-inch frames had a $200.00 median versus $115.88 for the 3-by-1-5/8-inch group, a calculated $84.12 difference—not an isolated causal estimate for steel size. Stock type: the two lowest frame prices were factory-overrun surplus sold FOB Oregon. Quantity: Uline's frame falls from $200 to $190 at four or more (5%), its cited deck from $45 to $41 at 12 or more (about 8.9%), and Global Industrial's frame from $219.95 to $209.95 at two or more (about 4.5%). Those are listing examples, not a universal discount range. Material Flow's tariff-related notice is the seller's explanation of possible price changes; this survey does not measure tariffs' contribution to any price, and the historical trade-order figures below are not a 2026 landed-cost calculation. 561014

Which codes and permits apply to pallet rack components?

Three bodies of rules reach pallet rack components from different directions: the adopted building code and its rack-standard references, applicable workplace-safety rules, and fire-protection requirements for the stored commodities and arrangement. RMI explains that structural rack installations can require building review and engineering documentation, while the Grand Rapids Fire Department separately publishes operational-permit criteria for high-piled storage. A component's name, asking price or catalog rating answers none of those site-specific approval questions by itself. 11925

The building-code chain

The 2021 IBC's section 2209.1 requires the design, testing and utilization of cold-formed or hot-rolled steel storage racks to conform to ANSI/MH16.1, with a seismic-design cross-reference to ASCE 7 where applicable. RMI's own edition comparison identifies MH16.1-2012 as the 2021 IBC reference and MH16.1-2021 as the 2024 IBC reference; its discussion distinguishes the separate cantilever-rack standard, MH16.3. These are model-code and issuer-reference observations, not a transcription of Michigan's amended Chapter 35. RMI also describes typical permit documentation: rack configuration and loads, engineering calculations, fabrication and installation details, floor-slab and soil information, and any connections to the building. Which submittals and permits are required for a particular project is an authority-having-jurisdiction determination. 11718

Workplace-safety enforcement

The cited federal materials-storage rule is not an ANSI-style rack-design specification. Under 29 CFR 1910.176(b), stored material must not create a hazard and tiered materials must be secured and limited in height so they remain stable; the OSH Act's General Duty Clause separately addresses recognized serious hazards. Those provisions should not be relabeled as federal rules containing every numerical limit in the RMI standard. OSHA's May 21, 2026 memorandum states that its federal maximum penalties remain $16,550 per serious or other-than-serious violation and $165,514 per willful or repeat violation for 2026. Michigan operates a state plan with its own jurisdictional coverage and rules; those federal maxima are not presented here as a verified Michigan fine schedule. 1920212224

Fire code

Fire protection touches both components and the open spaces around them. RMI identifies NFPA 13 sprinkler-design considerations in the choice and arrangement of decking and flue spaces; an accessory article is not itself the issuing fire code, so this page does not assign a universal six-inch flue rule to every storage configuration. The Grand Rapids guide gives high-piled storage criteria, including height, area and commodity considerations, but its Chapter 23 citation conflicts with the 2012 IFC's Chapter 32 contents. The next section separates the city guide's wording, the adopting ordinance and that cross-reference discrepancy. 14252646

What are the pallet rack component rules in Michigan and Kent County?

LARA lists the 2021 Michigan Building Code as effective April 9, 2025; RMI separately identifies the editions referenced by the 2021 and 2024 model IBC. In Grand Rapids, a 2014 ordinance adopted the 2012 IFC, while the city's current operational-permit guide contains a high-piled-storage chapter citation that does not match that edition's contents. The 15-entry local source map below distinguishes these document facts from project-specific determinations and includes Speedrack's documented connection to Sparta and its announced Walker expansion. 1823252629

What the Grand Rapids permit guide says

The Grand Rapids Fire Department's Operational Permit Guide is the city's own list of activities requiring operational permits. Its high-piled-storage entry describes a building or portion used for storage 12 feet high and higher in an area exceeding 500 square feet, plus certain high-hazard commodities stored above 6 feet. The guide describes annual permits on a January-to-December cycle. These are the guide's stated criteria; a building review for a rack and the operational fire review for its use are separate questions. The Development Center's official permit portal is the city's building-permit information route. 2528

The primary documents do not agree on the chapter citation. The guide cites IFC-2012, Chapter 23, but ICC's 2012 IFC contents put high-piled combustible storage in Chapter 32 and motor-fuel facilities and repair garages in Chapter 23. Ordinance 2014-24, adopted May 13, 2014, expressly changed the city from the 2003 IFC to the 2012 IFC with local amendments; the historical transition is documented by the adopting ordinance itself, not inferred from an older code extract. This reference preserves the discrepancy rather than presenting the guide's chapter number as a verified code provision or inventing a corrected permit threshold. The city fire-code official determines how the adopted code and local amendments apply to a particular storage arrangement. 25264546

Speedrack and Michigan-made parts

Kent County has a documented rack-manufacturing connection. Michigan's June 21, 2021 announcement states that Speedrack first established its headquarters in Sparta in 1989 and planned a new Walker manufacturing facility expected to generate $64.5 million in investment and 164 jobs, with an $820,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. These are the announced expectations and grant, not verified final spending, hiring or a claim about today's headquarters. The municipal geography is supported by Kent County's own directory. 2930

In the December 2024 sunset review of the antidumping order on Chinese steel racks, Commerce names Speed Rack Products Group among eight Coalition for Fair Rack Imports members, alongside Heartland Steel Products, Husky Rack and Wire, Steel King Industries, Nucor Warehouse Systems, Tri-Boro Shelving & Partition, Ridg-U-Rak and UNARCO Material Handling. The notice spells Ridg-U-Rak as “Ridg-U-Rack”; the eight-member count comes from that notice and is not a count of all U.S. rack manufacturers. Elsewhere in the state, Shelving Inc. sells Unirak teardrop frames it labels Michigan-made; the $115.88 observation appears in Table 7. 1231

Seismic category

This page does not assign a Seismic Design Category to Grand Rapids or assume a soil class and risk category for a facility. RMI's FAQ explains seismic design distinctions and points to the ASCE 7 Hazard Tool, but a citywide label cannot replace the applicable code edition, site parameters, building/rack conditions and professional design. No map value was generated for this reference, and the local dataset deliberately contains no address-level seismic assignment. 1

When does a damaged pallet rack component have to come out of service?

RMI's guidance identifies conditions requiring isolation and qualified evaluation rather than a universal acceptable-dent number. Its examples include columns outside alignment limits, damaged bracing, improperly engaged beam connections and significant fire exposure; the component-specific actions below belong to the manufacturer, qualified engineer and trained personnel working under an approved plan. A numerical limit on this page is not permission to approach, unload, straighten, heat, weld or test a potentially unstable rack. 134

Two boundaries belong here. First, these numbers and observed defects call for qualified evaluation, not do-it-yourself straightening or a field proof test; potentially unstable racks require controlled access and an approved handling plan. Second, accepted repairs and reconfigurations must be reflected in the capacity documentation. RMI's load-plaque/LARC guidance explains that repaired-rack drawings should identify repair components, column sizes, splice locations and anchorage so that the displayed limits belong to the actual configuration. An old plaque is not evidence that a new repair or beam arrangement is safe. 13

Why do pallet rack components matter now?

Four dated developments explain the context: RMI describes major revisions in 2021 and 2023; Michigan's 2021 Building Code became effective April 9, 2025; Commerce continued the Chinese steel-rack antidumping and countervailing-duty orders effective March 5, 2025; and BLS reported about 1.84 million warehousing-and-storage payroll jobs in August 2026. None of these facts by itself proves that an existing rack lost capacity, that tariffs caused a particular asking price, or that a warehouse injury involved a rack. Their dates and scopes are kept separate below. 1233435

The trade orders cover qualifying racks and parts, but not every item a warehouse calls a rack component. The September 16, 2019 order lists antidumping margins from 18.06% to 144.50% across its specified exporter/producer categories, with 144.50% for the China-wide entity; its countervailing-duty table lists company-specific rates from 1.50% to 102.23%. Both ranges are verified historical 2019 tables, not asserted current rates for a 2026 shipment. After the first sunset review, the orders continued effective March 5, 2025; the continuation directs collection at the rates in force when merchandise enters and does not guarantee a fixed five-year expiration date. Its detailed scope includes specified frames, beams and other parts but expressly excludes identified decking and small connection hardware. Neither the order's title nor these ranges replace a product-specific scope and entry-rate determination. 2323334

The workforce figures frame the safety rules without measuring rack incidents. BLS reported 1,837,400 payroll jobs in warehousing and storage in August 2026, preliminary and seasonally adjusted; 23,848 private establishments in the first quarter of 2026, preliminary; 286,750 industrial truck and tractor operators in that industry in 2025; 32 workplace fatalities in 2024, compared with 28 in 2023; and 4.8 total recordable injury or illness cases per 100 full-time-equivalent workers in 2024. Each belongs to U.S. NAICS 493, not all warehouse activity inside businesses classified in other industries. The cited series does not identify which incidents involved racks, and this reference makes no rack-collapse or rack-injury estimate from it. 35

How was this pallet rack components reference assembled?

This is an original compilation of published source observations, classifications and calculations—not a rack test, a representative transaction survey or a licensed-standard audit. The final verification pass was completed September 11, 2026, and the downloadable records carry that date alongside the actual source and its scope.

What we collected, from where, and when. The pass checked RMI's published FAQ and relevant issuer articles for the component rules and edition comparisons; the FAQ's page-delivered content was used where the site's initial HTML did not expose its answers. It checked federal rule text for materials storage, fall-protection anchorage and toeboards, and OSHA's own May 21, 2026 penalty memorandum. Michigan's effective date comes from LARA's current Code Books page; the state fire-rule text comes from Michigan's administrative-code system. Grand Rapids evidence comprises the current permit guide, the Development Center portal and the historical adoption text of Ordinance 2014-24. The city guide's chapter citation was compared against ICC's 2012 IFC contents rather than silently accepted. Commerce's 2019 order, 2024 sunset-review notice and 2025 continuation supply the trade facts; Michigan's own June 2021 announcement supplies the Speedrack project expectations. BLS's NAICS 493 page was checked with its September 11, 2026 extraction date and each series' own reference period. 11746

How the price survey was built. Twenty selected product/variant observations were checked against five sellers that publish asking prices without a login: Uline, Global Industrial, Shelving.com, Pallet Rack Now and Material Flow & Conveyor Systems. For each row, the file records the seller, brand/model or identifiable listing, specification, displayed asking price, sale unit, capacity only where observed, URL, capture date and notes. Product/category pages are identified as such. The smallest displayed quantity tier was used; optional coupons, cart discounts, freight and tax were not applied. Uline's protector rows use the quantity-one column—$39 for H-3720 and $47 for H-3721—not the lower prices shown under quantity 12. Where a product was sold as a beam pair or a two-beam level, the price was divided by two for comparison, without implying that one beam can be purchased alone. 51644

How comparable groups were defined. The survey compares 42-inch-deep by 96-inch-high teardrop frames; 96-inch step beams with 4- to 5-inch faces; 42-by-46-inch waterfall wire decks; and steel column protectors separated into 12- and 18-inch groups. The four-anchor kit is a separate one-observation category. The frame section subgroups are subsets of the six-frame sample, not six additional observations. The sample is selected, small and unweighted: it is not a census of available products, an equal-weight seller panel or a claim about a typical completed purchase. Listings have different specifications and conditions, and two frames are factory-overrun surplus. Capacity bases are preserved rather than normalized into a false cross-brand performance comparison.

How prices were calculated and rounded. Mean equals the sum of the exact normalized unit prices divided by the number of observations. Median is the middle observation for an odd count or the arithmetic mean of the two middle observations for an even count. Monetary results are displayed to two decimal places using decimal half-up rounding, not binary-floating-point rounding. Thus the upright median is $123.455 before display rounding and $123.46 afterward; the beam median is $61.205 → $61.21; and the deck median is $31.805 → $31.81. The $215.95 beam pair is $107.975 per beam before display rounding, and that exact value is retained for summary calculations. The bare-bay illustration explicitly uses the displayed cent-rounded medians, producing $619.00; substituting the $200.00 large-column median produces $772.08. No national price or installed-cost estimate is inferred from either total.

How the reference tables were processed. Table 1 preserves 20 entries: 18 physical component/assembly/accessory groups plus the fall-protection-use and temperature-condition entries. It does not count 20 mandatory physical pieces in a rack. Table 2 compares terminology and functions from the cited documents without inferring compatibility. Table 4 transcribes all 15 seller-chart rows; its percentages divide each published value by 27,600, and its file marks spacings exceeding the 96-inch product height. The chart's source conflict is carried with the numbers. Table 5 compares the published specifications of six models from one line, not calculated minimum beam dimensions. Table 8 and its CSV contain the same 15 local records. The JSON contains the five public tables' record sets and the exact/displayed price summaries.

Verification status and source conflicts. A ★ means the specified primary document or seller listing was read for that observation. For ANSI requirements, “read” means the issuer's published summary, unless a separately identified official rule is cited; it does not claim direct access to every clause of the licensed standard. For retail observations, it means the seller displayed the price or description, not that this publication tested capacity or origin. No provisional numbers are published. Where primary content conflicts with itself or another primary document, the conflict remains explicit: the H-5719 height/spacing mismatch, Global Industrial's beam-capacity fields, and Grand Rapids' high-piled-storage chapter citation.

Refresh and version control. Prices are a dated snapshot, not live quotes. A new price release requires rechecking the same identified listings, recording substitutions separately and rerunning every summary and dependent illustration. Code references, agency pages, permits and standards are checked before a substantive update and after a relevant issuer change; no date is advanced merely because the calendar changes. What does this reference establish—and what does it not?

This reference establishes what the cited documents and sellers published and how this publication assembled or calculated the resulting tables. It does not certify rack safety, determine a facility's legal compliance or turn a small set of asking prices into a national market measurement.

The full standard was not independently audited. ANSI MH16.1 statements follow RMI's own FAQ and articles. RMI is the issuer, but its summaries are not the complete licensed standard, and section numbering must be checked against the edition actually used for a project. References to the 2021 and 2024 IBC identify RMI's model-code comparison; they are not a clause-by-clause audit of Michigan's amended Chapter 35. Anyone designing, permitting or certifying a rack needs the applicable full documents and qualified review, not this page alone.

The price survey is small and records asking prices. Twenty selected observations from five sellers on one day are a snapshot, not transaction data, a probability sample or a measure of every product in the United States. Two of the six upright listings are factory-overrun surplus stock. Freight, tax, promotional eligibility, minimum purchase quantities and project-specific engineering are outside the quoted unit-price comparison. A seller's tariff notice is attributed to that seller; it does not establish a measured price effect. Source-specific capacities in Table 7 use different beam-spacing and design assumptions and are not directly comparable across sellers.

Table 4 contains a genuine source-applicability problem. Uline displays a capacity table extending to 120-inch spacing on a product page for a 96-inch frame. Spacings of 102, 108, 114 and 120 inches cannot occur on that SKU. The calculated 77.9% difference describes the two endpoints in the published table—not a measured loss on a 96-inch frame, not proof that one can move its beams to 120 inches, and not a universal percentage change. None of its rows independently certifies a complete rack installation.

Other source conflicts remain visible. Global Industrial's cited Interlake beam page displays 6,810 lb per pair in its product title/specification and 7,050 lb in image alt text. This reference reports the asking price but does not resolve that capacity discrepancy on the seller's behalf. Grand Rapids' guide cites IFC-2012 Chapter 23 for high-piled storage, while ICC places that topic in Chapter 32; the 2014 adopting ordinance separately documents the change from the 2003 to the 2012 IFC. The authority having jurisdiction, not a silently edited citation, resolves project applicability.

Figures excluded rather than guessed. No universal rack capacity, anchor diameter/embedment, flue clearance, support-bar rating, safe dent depth or freezer-service limit is supplied. The dataset does not assign a Seismic Design Category, default soil class or risk category to a Grand Rapids address. Michigan and Kent County warehouse employment and establishment totals were not extracted and are not inferred from the national BLS figures. A draft's 2017 import-value estimate was not established from an issuing-agency document and is not carried into this release; the national-context file instead includes the directly verified trade-scope exclusions already described on this page. Historical 2019 duty rates are not labeled current entry rates. The cited BLS series does not identify rack-related incidents, so this page does not manufacture rack-injury or collapse totals.

What the local industry figures measure. The $64.5 million investment and 164 jobs were expected outcomes in Michigan's June 2021 announcement, and the $820,000 amount was the announced performance-based grant. They are not verified completion results or a present-day company profile. The eight-company coalition count is the count in a named 2024 trade proceeding, not the total number of domestic rack manufacturers. A seller's Michigan-made statement is an attributed listing observation, not this publication's factory inspection.

What this page does not establish. It does not establish that two brands' components can be mixed, what a particular rack can hold, which anchors a particular slab needs, whether any existing damage is acceptable, whether an installation needs a specific permit or how to repair or unload damaged rack. Those questions belong to the manufacturer, qualified design professionals, trained personnel operating under an approved plan, and the applicable authorities. A name match, a price comparison, a chart value or a schematic mental picture is not engineering authorization.

What else do readers ask about pallet rack components?

The answers below distinguish component identification from capacity, compatibility and permit approval. Each answer retains the same source boundaries as the reference tables; none provides a repair or installation procedure.

What are the parts of a pallet rack called?

The structural parts are upright frames—columns, bracing and baseplates—load beams, and their connectors and locking devices. Load-surface parts include wire decking and pallet supports; stability-related parts include anchors, shims, row spacers and designed ties; protection and information items include guards, containment and the load plaque. Table 1 retains 20 reference entries, but only 18 are physical part/assembly/accessory groups: fall-protection use and temperature exposure are related entries, not extra pieces required in every rack. 1344041

Is an upright the same as a column?

No. The upright frame is the whole braced assembly; a column is one vertical member inside it. RMI's rules are written per column: every column must be anchored (section 4.2), and the 1/2-inch-per-10-feet plumb limit is measured on a column, not averaged across a frame 1.

What is a beam clip, and is it the same as the beam connector?

A clip can be a beam locking device, but the word “clip” alone does not reliably identify its function across product terminology. The connector transfers forces between beam and column; the locking function resists unintended disengagement and can be integrated or provided separately. RMI describes a 1,000-pound-force upward-resistance requirement for machine-loaded racks except movable-shelf racks; it is not a no-distortion warranty or permission to test a beam with a forklift. 13842

Can I mix pallet rack components from different manufacturers?

RMI warns that column shapes, hole patterns and connectors are design-specific and that visual similarity does not establish compatibility. Mixed components can create fit, strength, function and warranty problems; a tested, authorized combination is different from an improvised match. The relevant manufacturer documentation and qualified design review, not the common part name or teardrop shape, determine whether a combination is acceptable. 139

Can you walk on wire rack decking?

No. RMI says ordinary storage-rack wire decking is not engineered as a pedestrian platform; a person introduces concentrated and dynamic loads different from the storage-rating assumptions. A storage load rating does not authorize walking or standing on the deck, and the deck can move or become unstable on its supports. 140

Do pallet racks need a permit in Michigan?

RMI explains that structural rack systems can be subject to building-code review and permitting; LARA lists the 2021 Michigan Building Code as effective April 9, 2025. Grand Rapids separately publishes high-piled-storage operational-permit criteria involving height, area and commodity, while its Development Center provides the official building-permit route. The city's guide has a chapter-reference discrepancy documented in the local-source section, so this page does not turn the guide into a universal height-only test or decide a facility's approvals. 123252846

How much beam sag is normal?

RMI describes L/180 at design load: approximately 0.53 inch on a 96-inch span or 0.67 inch on a 120-inch span. A tighter project requirement may apply, and permanent deformation is not explained away by that elastic design limit. Sag outside the documented design assumptions or deformation that remains after unloading calls for qualified assessment and controlled handling, not a do-it-yourself unloading or straightening operation. 1

What does a load plaque have to show?

RMI's guidance identifies the maximum unit load and/or maximum uniformly distributed load per level, average unit load if applicable, maximum total load per bay, and the levels that allow stacked unit loads. Its plaque/LARC article recommends placement at entry points and where configurations differ; its directly checked FAQ specifies a minimum plaque area of 50 square inches. Those findings are attributed to RMI's published guidance, not to a separate federal OSHA rack-plaque standard. 13
